I have been packing the hubby’s lunch for years. From the beginning days of our marriage through now anytime he’s needed a meal packed I’ve made sure that he has something fun and tasty to take whether it’s to work or on a hike or out in the forest to cut wood. I give him standards like cashew nuts and raisins but I also like to include little surprises to make him smile. He never knows WHAT he is going to find when he opens his lunch bag and that is half the fun! I love to think of what his face looks like when he opens his lunch. I think he would say that it was all part of #MyGoodLife.
On this day he was heading out into the woods to cut firewood for the winter. Out here you can get a permit to go into the National Forest and cut up deadwood to use for personal use. I can’t remember the cost, but it’s minimal – perhaps $15 – and it allows you to harvest 4 cords of wood. There are restrictions as to where you can cut but something like 85% of our county is Federal land so it’s pretty easy to find. This was his third trip out; he really enjoys these expeditions as they give him time in the woods which he loves and they are a part of how he gets his exercise. After he brings it home he then chops it into pieces small enough for our woodstove – more exercise!
Since he was going to be out in the woods on a hot day I froze his Nesquik®! This way it would provide additional cooling for the rest of his lunch as well as a burst of flavor to brighten up his mid-day break. If he’s lucky it will still be a little bit slushy when he drinks it and it will be like drinking a fudge pop!
It was quite solid when he took off early in the morning so I was pretty sure it would work out to be in a perfect half frozen state by the time he ate his lunch. (He also carries plenty of water since it was in the low 90ies and this is hard, physical work!) He knows to make sure to stay hydrated in conditions like we are currently experiencing.
I love to send along something to make him smile. Something unexpected. This trip it was Wonka® Nerds®. A little bit of sugar never hurts when you are doing physical work now does it? And why not a candy that is so bright and full of fun. I like Nerds® myself because they aren’t too sweet and then there are all of those happy colors! So he was surely set with a fun and flavorful lunch that would carry him through his wood cutting. I think he would say that the #CollectiveBias is that a fun lunch is a lunch that gets eaten to the last crumb!
The hubby had a very successful day in the woods. He came home with about 3/4s of a cord of wood. He’s already brought back about 2 1/2 cords so he figures he’ll make one more trip into the woods and he’ll be done with the gathering for this year. Then he’ll start the chopping. Hopefully next winter won’t be as harsh as last winter where we went through almost 5 cords of wood. The winter before we barely used 2 cords so you can see how it can vary from year to year. There is about half a cord still left from last year.
I found these treats at Walmart – the Nesquik® with the shelf stable milk. The Wonka® Nerds® were in the candy section – shhhhh, I bought extras for myself. There are many fun Nestle® products that can help you make lunch boxes fun for both your Back to School kids and your older “kids,” ie: your spouses! I know mine has been enjoying the surprises I have been putting in his.
