My Opinion:
This is my first time reading one of the tales from Bear Creek but I can say that I would be happy to return. It was fun to meet the denizens of the community from snooty Mrs. Onstott to the Hampton family to the fantastic cook and tracker Nick Two John. But of course, the stars of the tale are Tempe Crabtree, the deputy in town and her husband Pastor Hutch. All of the characters are developed and distinct and represent the folks you find in any small town.
The story develops at a nice pace with lots of twists along the way. The bears are bedeviling the townspeople due to a lack of food in their natural habitat and this plays a key role in the murder mystery. Ms. Meredith also educates about bears and their behavior without over preaching. Living in bear country I can appreciate that.
Tempe goes about her work solving the crimes of the town of Bear Creek with a quick mind and strong work ethic. Her hubby tries to bring the town together at his church. They make a good team when trying to scare bears away. All in all a sweet, entertaining way to spend a rainy afternoon.
