About the Book:
In the wake of a duel, Marcel Blake, the Duke of Lear, an infamous rake and gamester, leaves London to visit his cousin in Paris. Here he meets and falls in love with Julie, the British ambassador’s daughter. Thinking she would be horrified if she learned of his reputation, Marcel fights the attraction; but when he is wounded while saving her from the unwanted advances of a less-than-desirable would-be suitor, Marcel finds that she returns his affections.
About the Author:
My Opinion:
The Duke of Lear finds himself in quite a predicament as he fights one duel too many. Forced to flee England for his cousin’s home in France due to the scandal he feels that it is more the fault of the fool he shot than himself. He is a man of overweening pride and perhaps, no definitely too much ego.
While in France he meets a young lady who does not faint at the feet of his title or ah-hem, good looks. No, she actually has the temerity to talk back to him! To the DUKE OF LEAR! How dare she! Who does this Miss Julie think she is? But no matter, when the Duke comes upon her being ravaged by a local lord he rescues her – and makes an enemy. An enemy that will haunt him.
I must admit to a bit of confusion at the start of this tale but once I found myself into it I found it to be a light, frothy tale of love found, lost and found again. It was quick and easy to read perfect for the beach or for a rainy day. It is full of bright dialog, charming characters, intrigue, treachery and beautiful clothing. Just what one wants in a Regency romance. Not to mention cantankerous horses and cute puppies. Pick it up for a trip back to a time full of lace and love.
