It it a truth universally acknowledged that a woman up in years must be in want of bone and joint health. I will readily admit that I am not a spring chicken but I am not willing to let my knees (and hips, shoulders and ankles) get me down! It’s summer here in the wonderland I call home and there is much fun to be had. I love hot weather – I realize I am in the minority here – but I truly come into my own when the temperatures rise which is good because I am usually in my kitchen at the height of summer doing one of my favorite things, canning.
Having a small farm where you grow most of the food you eat is work, but it’s very fulfilling. I know that what I put into those jars is organically grown and processed as soon as it was picked. I also freeze a lot of the vegetables, but it’s making sauces, condiments, jams and jellies that’s the real fun for me. Every year, assuming the harvest is good, I make tomato sauce, ketchup, pizza sauce, Worcestershire sauce, applesauce, fruit jams, eggplant tapenade, ratatouille and anything I can think of given what I have to work with. Then all winter long we feast. It’s rewarding but it does lead to long days on my feet and I pay for that so I make sure that I take care of my old bones by taking calcium with Vitamin D. I’ve long taken Caltrate® to fulfill those and I’m so happy they have a new product in their line, Caltrate® Bone & Joint Health – it adds in some extra minerals to help maintain my bone flexibility.
I have my health issues and I’ve learned how to pace myself. There are some days I do absolutely nothing but stare at the river. It’s just the way things are for me. If something comes in from the garden that day the hubby will prep for me to take care of them the next day. He’s wonderful that way. We’ve been working together like this for many years – even before the farm.
Summer doesn’t just bring work – not that I consider time in my kitchen work – it also brings the opportunity to get out and truly enjoy this state I now call home. I have never seen anywhere as beautiful as Montana and there are so many places to explore. There are myriad hiking trails within a 10 minute drive from home so we can be in the woods enjoying nature in almost no time at all. There is one just on the other side of the road that’s a favorite. It starts at a curve right after a gorgeous view of the river.
We hadn’t been there in a bit so I was very happy to be getting out for a hike.
Doesn’t it look inviting?
It’s always so peaceful in the woods. It’s such a wonderful way to spend time with someone you love. No distractions, just warm sunshine and nature’s beauty. It was a perfect day to be out; not too hot and lot’s of light.
Come on! Join me!
It was great to break out my hiking boots and get out into the forest. We didn’t see any critters but we were scolded by a red squirrel for most of the time we were walking. I don’t think he/she was happy we were visiting. We saw some elderberries and some chokecherries along the way. No huckleberries. We weren’t high enough.
It was perfection. Being modern old folk we had to take a selfie! Hopefully we’ll have more chances to get out in the woods but due to unforeseen circumstances the hubby had to go back to work as fire chief. His free time just got severely curtailed and our ability to just up and go is gone. Especially during fire season. He can’t go far from town unless there is another officer around to take the lead on a fire scene so I am not sure if we’ll get out many more times.
I did bring back a treat for Pricilla. I’m always on the lookout for old man’s beard when we go to the woods. It’s a lichen that is all over the forest here. She loves the stuff and if I find it anywhere I bring it home to her and she just gobbles it down. She was a very happy goat with her treat. The goats are, of course, another big part of my life no matter the season!
Even if I won’t have as many opportunities to go hiking with my love as I’d like this summer I know I’ll have plenty of time to play in my kitchen. Who knows what I’ll put in the pantry this year? I put up a lot of cherries back in June so I’m hoping to be able to make some of my blue ribbon winning Cherry Barbecue Sauce. Time will tell.
I just know that I will give my bones and joints all the help I can. It’s the least I can do – seriously! I only have to take one tablet a day and I get Calcium, Vitamin D and UC-II which supports healthy cartilage thereby promoting joint flexibility and health. I can tell you that after a long day on my feet in the kitchen my hips, knees and back ache. That’s why I choose to take something to help me aid ‘dem bones.
