My Opinion:
I have to say that after reading this book I had absolutely no clue as to why it had been written. The title had little to do with the story within, the ending was less than satisfactory and the middle was a mish-mash of political theory, immigrant policy and love story. I had no blessed clue that it was a prequel to a well known series.
Gina Attaviano is a very young (14) immigrant to the Boston area just before the turn of the 20th century when she meets Harry Barrington, a rich descendant of one of the voyagers on the Mayflower. Gina acts completely out of character for a young girl of her age and time but it wouldn’t be a story without her outrageous behavior. Harry can’t make a decision to save his life. Of course they fall in love but will they marry with so much against them?
The book was at times a screed on socialism and at other times a tutorial on the Panama Canal. I never quite grasped the motivations of any of the characters. I was hoping to get some answers at the end of the book but I was left with well, nothing. No answers, no resolution, no nothing. Perhaps if I had read the other books but there was no indication to me that this was a prequel. So I am left with this as a stand alone – and it did not.
