Spring is finally showing its face around my little part of Montana and that makes me very happy. I have seen the sun again and after months of grey my thoughts are turning to all of the outside projects that just call my name – until the garden comes in and I am tied to the stove!
Obviously the garden is the biggest of those projects. Right now it is a wasteland…
…just waiting for the hubby to get in there and turn the soil and plant all of his seedlings. He has started some in the basement; tomatoes, peppers and eggplant as these are the plants that need the most time to grow before he plants them. Montana does not have a long growing season so he babies his seedlings under a grow lamp and with a space heater. That one hay covered area is hiding growth – garlic! The gophers didn’t eat it this year and I will have a crop. I’m very excited about that.
We also have a very big project planned for the yurt! It will be getting a deck this year. I’m so very excited about that. It will be lovely to be able to sit out and watch the river. This big pile of pieces
will soon be attached to the house and I’ll be able to relax on (fingers crossed) new deck furniture. We are planning a small table with two chairs and some kind of seating plus an umbrella to keep the hot summer sun at bay. I won’t know exactly what I’ll put out there until I see the finished deck and sort out spacing but I’ve been looking and I know there are some beautiful pieces available at The Home Depot!
These pieces come off of the sliding glass doors and the bits that look like a ladder are the railings.
We are also hoping to put a walk around deck on the whole yurt. It all depends on money of course but no matter how much gets done this year it will be very cool!
Can you picture me sitting on my new chair, reading a book and watching the river?
I’m also excited because the deck is UP. Do you know what that means? I can have FLOWERS! The goats won’t get up there. I love flowers and haven’t been able to plant any because they would be goat snacks.

Look at this brilliant idea from The Home Depot Garden Club. Vertical flower gardening! This would be perfect for my new deck! I can have pretty flowers all summer long that would not end up in the stomachs of my little nibblers. I cannot wait!
So you can see it’s going to be a very busy Spring/Summer around the farm. A good kind of busy. Long awaited projects will be completed and another year of gardening awaits. Hubby is planting an herb garden for me this year so that is another big move forward in our ability to grow everything we need. If all goes well we might even get those fruit trees planted. We have a spot planned for them, it’s just a matter of getting it cleared out and fenced off from the goats.
They will miss their “weed bush” though; they do love to eat that thing – whatever it is.
Whatever we get done we will get it done with the help of The Home Depot!
