What is PawCulture™?
I will admit that I like to read about all things cat. You would think a woman who lives with 5 would have her fill of cat, but no. I still go looking for more things feline. I love to share the articles and pictures that I find on Facebook and Twitter. Recently I discovered a new site to visit full of articles to make any cat – and dog – lover happy. PawCulture brings you pet lifestyle, pet DIY, pet recipes, pet tips and much more. I think I might use their pet recipe for liver cat treats and surprise the Farm cats.
I make snacks for the hubby all the time – why not my furry family members?
PawCulture has a wide array of articles that will educate you, make your heart sing and make you think. If you have a dog or a cat PawCulture wants to be there for you to inform, inspire and entertain. You will find celebrity pet tales as well as everyday pet inspiration. I was particularly excited by one article that helped with one of the great mysteries of cat behavior….
Why Do Cats Love Boxes?
I haven’t run into a cat person yet who doesn’t have tales to tell about how much their cat can’t resist a box. So may of the cat photos you see are cats in boxes. Every cat owner asks at one time or another Why Do Cats Love Boxes? Around these parts I just have to leave a box on the floor and soon it will contain a large, fluffy, orange cat.
Sherpa the Farm cat is always the first cat in.
It can be a BIG box. He doesn’t seem to mind having space and room to roam. I’ll find him playing with a toy mouse or a sparkle ball in a box. It’s vastly entertaining to see the toy flying over the top of the box and a big paw coming out to catch it.
It can be a teeny, tiny box. He will squish all 15 pounds of himself in the smallest of boxes and yet still manage to somehow find a comfortable position and fall asleep.
No box remains a Sherpa free zone for long. He does not discriminate.
And then sometimes well, things happen.
Bwahahahahaha!
Don’t worry! No cats were harmed. He actually got himself out. He is one smart cat. Any time something comes into the house on the Big Brown Truck I leave the box out for the cats for a couple of days. OK, maybe I leave it out because it entertains us just as much as it entertains them.
So What ARE Some Reasons Cats Like Boxes?
The article at PawCulture quotes Marilyn Krieger, a certified cat behavior consultant and she notes that safety and security are the main reasons most cats like boxes. She says it lets a cat observe but not be seen. I guess they like to think they are ninja cats.
Perhaps that is what Harry the Farm cat is thinking as he tries to hide from Sherpa in his Shoei box. He took ove this box for a bit and made it his own but as often is the case around here a certain orange cat felt he should have the box.
There was quite the battle royale for possession of the box and it changed paws a couple of times but do I need to tell you how it came out in the end?
Uh-huh. Sherpa owned the box by the time the whappy paws was over. And he looks ready to defend it from all comers, doesn’t he?
Reason Number Two
The second reason cats like boxes according to the article is warmth. The box gives them a little extra layer of insulation. Does Harry look warmer to you? Or just cuter?
I can understand the warm thing on the smaller boxes – but on the huge boxes, I’m not so sure that I am convinced. Unless it has to do with warm air circulating.
But at least now I know a couple of reasons why cats like boxes so much. I’m thankful that I read the article on PawCulture. I’ll keep checking in to see what else I can learn. When it comes to cats I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning.
Maybe someone will write an article about why cats like bags. Snowy the Farm cat has a thing for canvas bags. I wonder if it’s the same reasons as for boxes?
