The garden is a big part of life here on the farm and we work hard at maintaining it. The hubby does a lot of research to keep it free from bugs using organic methods and our fertilizers all come from the four legged members of the farm and the compost pile we work on all year long. All of our food scraps and any weeds or garden matter the goats don’t eat go into the compost. (We don’t feed them the nightshade plants; they can be poisonous over time to a goat’s liver.) Composting though, is a science. A science of which I was not so up to date. But lo and behold – the hubby was! We were missing one vital ingredient to our compost –
Who knew worms could provide so much? Not me! Well, I’m about to learn and I’m going to bring you all on the journey with me thanks to The Squirmfirm. (Is that not the cutest name ever?) The Squirmfirm makes worm composting bin and turns out the hubby has been wanting one for a long time. Why? Because worms help to break down food scraps and turn them into rich compost!

You purchase the worm composting bin and then you order your worms. Ours are coming tomorrow. I wonder if it’s anything like getting chicks in the mail; I suspect it’s much quieter! I’ve been saving the latest scrap collection to go in the worm bin. Gotta have happy worms! Now you might want to know what worms eat, It seems that they will even eat cardboard – I wonder if they are related to goats. heh.
The hubby is going to get our worm farm all set up and I’ll have a post showing you just how easy it is to start your very own worm farm. If you have a garden or are planning your garden for next year you know how important good compost is to the process. Then when our little squigglers arrive and get settled in I’ll show you them in their new happy home.
So stay tuned – now I’ll have the Happy Worms to go with the Happy Goats! You can learn so much more by visiting The SquirmFirm and you can find them on Facebook and Twitter too!
