The Farm cats are all fixed. I think it’s very important that when I assume the responsibility for an animal that I give it the healthiest life I can. Part of that healthy life includes fixing any cat that comes into my life. I’ve got some reasons to spay and neuter your pet below because I also believe that there are too many cats already in shelters and in feral colonies. I don’t want to add to those populations.
Dorian Wagner of Cat Lady Box is a tremendous advocate for cats; ferals, abandoned, shelter – any kind of cat that crosses her radar and needs help she marshals her forces and does what she can. Part of the proceeds from Cat Lady Box go to support cat organizations. She has come up with a new idea to help.
Neuter is Cuter
Cat Lady Box has a new tee shirt available and sales benefit spay and neuter programs. It’s the Neuter is Cuter tee shirt. It was available in many sizes and two colors – pink and heather grey – but some sizes are now sold out. It’s super soft and as you can see, absolutely adorable.
The Farm cats (and Harry’s trout) are very much in favor of the sentiment. All of the Farm cats are fixed and if you have been reading for any length of time you know that we have taken in a couple of random cats along the way and had them fixed only to have them go back to their original homes. (I’m writing about you Stubby and Fernando!)
5 Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Cat
The first thing I do when we bring a new cat into the household is make an appointment for the vet to get him or her checked out, get the appropriate shots and set up an appointment to be fixed. Why? Here are five reasons:
- If it’s a male I do not want him spraying all over the house. Male cats spray to mark territory. If you have more than one cat – even if the other cat is fixed – the new cat will start spraying. EVERYWHERE.
- If it’s a female she will go into heat. If she goes into heat she will escape and find a male. That will lead to kittens. There are enough cats in this world. I don’t want to be responsible for bringing more kittens into the world.
- Cats that are fixed tend to live longer, more healthier lives. They have less instances of various reproductive cancers for both sexes.
- It’s more cost effective to spay/neuter than to constantly have to deal the costs of having kittens
- Your outside cats will be less likely to roam far distances and your inside cats will not yowl and drive you crazy when their hormones get the better of them
Many people argue that fixed animals get fat. I have had A LOT of cats. Sherpa is a lot of cat but he is not fat, he is just a big, floofy cat. Getting your cat fixed will not result in weight gain. That comes from overfeeding and a lack of exercise – just like with us humans.
