There is nothing I love more than traveling about and seeing all of the beauty this country has to offer. I was so fortunate to have been able to spend three years doing just that in the fifthwheel. The hubby and I saw so many wonderful places in those years and I must admit that out of all of them my very favorite was Yellowstone National Park. If you haven’t been there you really should try and see it and if you have been there I am sure that like me you cannot wait to get back.
I’ve been to Yellowstone twice; once for a three week stop in the spring right after opening and once for a long weekend in February to celebrate our 25th anniversary. It was amazing in both seasons. Our first trip gave us a nice long time to explore but trust me, three weeks does not begin to touch all that is Yellowstone.
You cannot help but see bison when you go into the park. They are everywhere. They are HUGE. There are often bison jams on the roads. You do not want to mess with a 2,000 pound animal with horns so you just wait for them to get out of your way.
On our second or third day in the park we were driving slowly by some bison and I saw one and it seemed to be in distress and I was worried. I was just asking the hubby what he thought was wrong with it and out dropped a calf! It was something I never expected to see. Soon mom and baby were walking off to join the rest of the herd.
The park has some of the most awe inspiring scenery I have ever experienced. The vistas change with the sky, the weather and the season. Winter brings a whole new feeling to the park as snow covers everything. Most of my pictures from that trip are trapped on a dead computer. The wildlife is so diverse. On one day we saw (ONE DAY!): bison, elk, wolves, grizzly bears, moose, bald eagles, swans, white pelicans, storks, marmots and coyotes.
It is a volcanic area so the landscape can seem otherworldly in places with bubbling pots and geysers. Everyone knows of Old Faithful but there are so many others throughout the park. There are also hot springs and pools in glorious colors.
Can you tell how much I love the park? I so want to go back but it’s a bit of a drive from the farm and we really couldn’t do it on a day trip so it will have to wait until we no longer have the goats. We only have a small car now so I’ll be looking at those beautiful suitcases from Atlantic - the purple one of course! After living in a fifthwheel for 10 years I have become an expert at packing. We would often go from our base location for two or three day trips to explore the surrounding area. If you really consider where you are going and what you will be doing you can fit a wardrobe for two in a carry-on suitcase. I’ve done it! You really never wear everything you take do you? I also learned that the easiest way to fit clothes in a suitcase is to roll them - they don’t get wrinkled and you can fit much more in! I have done this on my last few trips and it really works. You can also stuff your underwear and socks in your shoes - that is wasted space. Use it! I HATE baggage claim so I do everything I can to avoid having to check a bag.
