The Farm Bunny ~ The Farm Cats

Rabbits and Cats: Introducing A Rescue Rabbit to Your Cat(s) or When Harry

I wrote the other day of how we brought a rescue rabbit into the yurt. Cappuccino the bunny has been a learning experience and a real delight. One of the things I was most concerned about was introducing a rescue rabbit to cats. After all, in the wild the cats would view the rabbit as a tasty treat.

Sherpa was the first cat to make contact and that didn’t go so very well but it wasn’t a controlled meeting. Sherpa decided to jump Cappuccino’s exercise pen which scared the bunny so the bunny bit Sherpa’s tail. I can’t say I blame Cappuccino.

Harry’s introduction went a bit better as I was there to erm, facilitate.

Introducing a Rescue Rabbit to Cats

Now, I am no expert when it comes to this topic. (Here is an expert) I can only share my experience and it’s really Harry’s experience if I want to be honest.  Harry was the cat I was most concerned with as he is my hunter. He goes out for gophers almost every day in the summer. I wasn’t at all sure how he was going to take to having a rabbit in the house.

Several friends had told me that rabbits and cats can live together quite well and oftentimes become the best of buddies. The hubby read a rabbit guide book and there were instructions about introducing the new rabbit to your cats but given we live in a house with open walls it was going to be hard to segregate Cappuccino – hence Sherpa’s erm, introduction.

When Harry Met Cappuccino

I went in and sat with Cappuccino and Harry came in with me. He sat down and I started petting him and then I reached over to pet the bunny. From there it was a bit of a calm ignoring of each other. You can follow along in pictures below.

Srsly human. Why did you bring that cat in here. – Cappuccino

OK fine. We will try. But don’t think we will like each other. -Cappuccino and Harry

I tried. Can I leave now? -Harry

Srsly. I’m outta here! – Harry    Hey! I didn’t bite you – Cappuccino

I really would like to actually know what they were thinking ’cause the looks on their faces are hysterical.

So Far, So Good

Since the first introduction Sherpa and Cappuccino are doing just fine in that Sherpa gives the bunny a very wide berth. Since Harry’s introduction went a little more smoothly he for the most part just ignores Cappuccino. Which, if you ask me is about as good as things could be. Pumpkin has totally ignored the bunny’s existence.

The book said to just introduce them slowly and all should be well and that does seem to be the case. Right now Cappuccino has pretty much free reign of the yurt and the cats are for the most part ignoring him. I really could not have asked for a better integration.

As I noted in the previous post. I never thought I’d have a bunny for a pet and yet here I am. I must admit that I am enjoying Cappuccino. He is a curious little being and he makes us both laugh every day. As I learn I will share. I hope you enjoy his adventures too.
