The Farm cats are a very important part of my life. They make me smile, they comfort me and they are one of the biggest sources of entertainment on the Farm. Each one of them came to me in a different way but they have all learned how to be a Farm cat – at least living the cushy life of a Farm cat on this little Farm. It is no mystery that in a household of five cats I would go through a lot of food – I buy both wet and dry Purina® food for the Farm cats, This is why I am so excited to be sharing this money saving offer from PetSmart.

The Farm cats are Purina cats. They nibble the wet foods, they gobble the kibble and they especially love the Friskies® Party Mix Treats. I don’t think they have a purrsonal opinion about their litter but I can tell you that we go through a LOT of Tidy Cats® litter.
As you can see from my last shopping trip to the PetSmart in Missoula, my cart runneth over. I’m always grateful for the super friendly and uber helpful PetSmart associates as they are right there to assist me with hauling those tubs o’Tidy Cats into my cart.
Did you know those tubs can come in very handy for storage after all the litter has been used? The hubby likes them for his shop; they are sturdy and they stack very well.
Shopping Farm Cats?
I don’t take the Farm cats shopping because well, they are Farm cats not city cats. None of them has ever been on a leash or a harness. They run free when they go outdoors. We have a fair amount of land here so they have room to roam. I do like to share what I see at the PetSmart and I tell them about the other animals I come across in the store. This time I saw some birdies – Harry gave them a LOT of thought.
I think the were good thoughts…..
Buy A Bag Give a Meal
I love that when I go to the PetSmart everything is easy to find. Plus PetSmart Charities is awesome! Don’t forget that right now PetSmart is running the Buy A Bag Give a Meal program so that when you buy a bag of Purina One chow (or any kibble) you are also giving a meal to a pet in need. This counts for both dog and cat kibbles!
The Farm cats are very happy to be able to give back – they know how good they have it here. Each one of them came from a situation where there wasn’t always enough food for them to eat so now that they don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from they want that for ALL pets.
How to Be a Farm Cat
So, you might be wondering what is involved with being a good Farm cat. The Farm cats have lots of important jobs. One of their main tasks is to check the garden for gophers. Both Harry and Snowy are expert hunters. This is a very good thing for the garden as the gophers can eat their way through a whole carrot crop. The hubby is very happy that Snowy turned out to be a hunter so that there are now two going after the little rodents.
A second very important Farm cat duty is entertaining the humans. Like when one of them has an onion blossom and uses it to tease. Although from Pumpkin the Farm cat’s point of view, Purina One tastes much better! Running around, chasing each other and just plain acting silly are also good for making the humans laugh. It’s no mystery that Farm cats eat a lot of food so stocking up when I can get a good deal is a good idea.
Up a Tree
Farm cats are also in charge of tree inspections on the property. Which does two things; it makes sure that the trees are free of rodents and it helps to sharpen their claws. Snowy is the expert at this particular activity. She has inspected most of the trees on the Farm.
Although she has had some help. Harry has also been known to climb a tree or two. I think it’s so he can spot a mousie. He is a bit more strategic than Snowy who loves to just run and climb helter skelter. Given all of this climbing and running it’s a good thing that they are fueled up every day with Purina® kibble and wet foods. It’s no mystery that they keep their kitty engines running by eating regularly.
There’s a Farm Cat Where?
Farm cats are also in charge of supervising. Or they like to think they are. You never know where you might find one watching what you are doing. I can share that Farm cats supervise from rooftops, deck rails, windows. They supervise from behind fences, under chicken houses, on old goat houses. They supervise from anywhere they can and they take their supervision job very seriously.
The Helping the Humans Side of Being Farm Cats
Farm cats have another vital job – giving hugs. Purrs help to keep me sane on the days that I’m busy and to comfort me on the days where I’m not feeling so well. The cats always know when I need a little purr-me-up and they will come and sit on me with me. This is probably the most important Farm cat job.
Party on the Swing Bench
Summer brings warm weather and that leads to another very important Farm cat duty – keeping me company while I read on my swing bench. Sometimes there is not enough room for all of us but we somehow manage to make it work. It is entertaining to try and read while being walked on by my kitties. They make sure I don’t get too deeply involved in the plot by walking all over my book and demanding my attention for pets. That way I don’t waste the day away reading. Isn’t that nice of them?
Do Farm Cats Get Paid?
Farm cats work hard, that is not in dispute. You have seen all of the tasks they perform so it is natural to ask about their wages. The Farm cats here can be a little demanding. They go in and out and out and in all day long and every time they come back in they demand ask for treats. Of course their favorite kind of treat is Friskies® Party Mix. You didn’t hear it from me but they might go through 4, 16 oz tubs a months.
Treat Me!
They run in the house and head immediately to the kitchen where they know they will get their salary treats. Harry won’t go to bed at night until he has some treats hand fed to him. I do believe that the hard work the Farms cats do is well worth the many many tubs o’treats. Especially given that when I shop at PetSmart in June for my participating Purina products and spend $40 I can get back a gift card for $10. That will help to buy more treats! I have no doubt that this will have the complete approval of the Farm cats.
What do you think Sherpa?
Sherpa?
I guess he has worked so hard showing you How to be a Farm Cat that he’s now demonstrating the last thing that Farm cats do and do well – sleep. After all of that tree climbing, gopher hunting, supervising and comforting a Farm cat needs some beauty rest.
