Using A Weather Station to Help on the Farm

AcuRite Weather Station, #AD

I was sent an AcuRite Weather Station for my honest review. Any opinions are my own.

Montana has a very short growing season. Add in the crazy aspects of the weather lately and the hubby needs all of the forecasting assistance he can get when it comes to planning and planting. He starts thinking about his garden in January! That’s when he lays out his plan for the year and starts ordering his seeds. He plants some seeds in March so that the seedlings can grow in the basement for planting after the chance of last frost. Figuring THAT out can be fun - one year we had four inches of snow on June 4th!

In the early days of planting it can still get cool at night so he has to cover the delicate plants. It’s important for him to know the outside temperature. The paper and the news can provide a number but it’s for Missoula which really has a different climate than we do. We’ve wanted a weather station for a while and were thrilled when AcuRite sent their Weather Environment System with Wind and Rain.

The whole household was excited when the big box arrived. Everything was well packed. Inside the box was:

AcuLink Internet Bridge, Color Display for 5-in-1 Sensor, 5-in-1 PRO Weather Sensor, (2) Temperature and Humidity Sensors, mounting bracket, debris filter, mounting hardware, Ethernet cable, power adapters, quick start guide, instruction manual

No, the cat did not come with the weather station - Sherpa the Farm cat just felt the need to “help.” As he always does. He did a final inspection of the box to make sure we didn’t leave anything in it. The hubby said he was very impressed with the system and felt it was a very good value for the money. He said it really gives a lot of information and he is very happy with how it works. (The system is on sale for $219.99 with free shipping.)

Only the bubble wrap which Sherpa has enjoyed playing with for quite a while. He thanks AcuRite for all of the fun.

Hubby read the instruction manual and then set about setting up the weather station. The Weather sensor had to be out in a place that wasn’t shaded by the house so accurate temperature, rain and wind measurements could be taken. He went out to mount it on a post. He had an audience:

curious goats

The goats are always curious as to anything new going on around their little world. They enjoyed the show - but you can see they stayed quite a ways back. They are not overly fond of the hubby. heh.

It was simple for him to mount the sensor on the post. He just put a piece of wood on the post and then used the included mounting bracket and hardware. He just needed his portable drill/screwdriver thingie. He then pointed it north and it was ready to go. He set the two temperature and humidity sensors - one inside and one outside and then he set up the internet bridge. From there it was simple to get the info to his tablet; he can now check the weather here from wherever he is.

THAT would have come in handy the day the skylight blew off now wouldn’t it have? Maybe he would have known that big wind was going to come and leave me staring at the sky! Or maybe not. We’ll never know. I’m just glad that we now have accurate weather information right at our fingertips.

AcuRite Color Display, info as of 8/6/15, #AD

The Color Display for 5 in 1 Sensor sits right across from us as we sit in the living room. While it shows no rain as of today we did have some the other night and the weather station was very accurate in its measurement. How do I know that? Because we have a rain gauge and it had the exact same rain measurement.

The Weather Sensor has been in operation now for about two weeks. It is actually kind of fun to watch spin and spin. It has been wonderful to have all of this information at our fingertips. I know it’s going to come in handy for him as the summer changes to fall. When you are growing your food the weather is a very important partner.

AcuRite makes a variety of weather stations, thermometers, rain gauges and weather radios. Orders over $99 ship free.

How would a weather station help make your life easier?
